Maths personal statement
Mathematical logic and concepts underlie functionality of practically every process from rocket science to the budget of a household It is this diversity of application that intrigues me and makes me want to study it in depth I feel it will give me logistic and reasoning abilities that are pivotal for virtually all areas of study consequently giving a very strong base for a wide range of careers My interest in mathematics dates back to primary school I have enjoyed the challenge ever since Throughout my O'levels in Pakistan I received merit certificates not only for math but for all other science subjects as well I have always marveled at the interrelation between these and math and have always sought to explore their common underlying principles
An opportunity to do that was when I was among the 40 top candidates selected from all over Pakistan by Buraq Planetary Society to participate in a ten day Space Camp’ Here I was not only exposed to wider prospects of knowledge but was given an invaluable experience of interaction with likeminded people I also gained useful communication skills and a great confidence boost
Due to a clash in my timetable during O'Levels I could not take Additional Mathematics at school Nevertheless I decided to study the course on my own initiative I managed to grasp the syllabus’ concepts during year 11 and achieved 96 on the paper This was a great sense of achievement for me and encouragement to pursue my interest further Having had no formal lessons I developed an independent selfreliant approach to maths which I believe is crucial for university level study Achieving the maximum number of A grades ever in my school’s 25 year history I was offered a full scholarship for A'Levels However I was not able to avail it as I moved to the UK
I have always been active in extra curricular Due to my immense interest in singing I have always been in the school choir and participated in many competitions and festivals including one in which I performed a solo for an audience of 2000 I also appeared in a weekly musical program for three years on national television At school I was elected the house Captain by the entire student body This required a high degree of leadership as well as organisational skills and involved an active role in the student council which meant coordinating major social events and sport competitions where I was responsible for pulling together teams for my house This experience invariably taught me to strike a sensible balance between academics and extra curricular activities
Last year I completed a work experience placement in an engineering firm Enotrac that mainly involved computer based investigation reports Although the work itself was not directly related to my field it was useful in giving me an insight to a professional atmosphere
I'm looking forward to experiencing university life it will not only give me the academic grounds to get into careers like actuarial science research and commerce but the social experience in itself is something to look forward to

The idea of proof has always held a real fascination for me The process of starting from a simple set of axioms and deriving almost any mathematical truth (putting Godel to one side) is what truly separates Mathematics from any other subject It is the closest we can ever get to absolute truth and therein lies its sheer beauty and the reason it is the only subject for me Of course it's also a good deal of fun
I have tried to extend my Maths as much as possible beyond the classroom and whenever I do so I uncover either some completely new and intriguing area of Mathematics or a very neat trick I hadn't thought of in more familiar territory One example of this is my attendance at weekly lectures given by the department of Mathematics at Bristol University covering topics from the Mathematics of juggling to quantum mechanics although some of my favourites have been those on the less exotic inequalities which taught me a lot about thinking about problems creatively I also attended a summer school run by the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth at the University of Durham where I spent two weeks being introduced to various approachable first year undergraduate topics such as proof by induction Markov chains and using Maple This experience not only allowed me to discover areas of Mathematics I would not otherwise have encountered but also gave me a small taste of university life as there was a large number of us living in one of the colleges I am also involved in the UKMT mentoring scheme whereby each month I am given a sheet of questions in areas not touched on at A level such as geometry and number theory giving me a good opportunity to explore new mathematical ideas myself and gain a much deeper appreciation of the interconnections within Mathematics and the creation of proofs I am a member of the school's Maths team and we are regularly successful in competing against teams from other schools in the area I also attend STEP sessions at local schools when available as I find the questions much more interesting than the standard A level ones and thinking about how to solve them has greatly improved my rigour in approaching problems
Among the mathematical books I have read I enjoyed Godel Escher Bach which gives a good grounding in axiomatic reasoning and formal systems whilst at the same time pointing out their major flaw I also liked To infinity and beyond by Eli Maor which deals with the concept of infinity its implications and its paradoxes both in Maths and elsewhere
I particularly enjoy the pure side of the A level syllabus especially trigonometry and calculus as they involve a certain degree of proof and introduce new concepts I believe my other academic subjects all complement Mathematics as they are about finding ways of describing reality be it through language in French or through equations and models in Physics and Chemistry I find Critical Thinking especially relevant as it is about the construction of sound logical arguments an art lying at the heart of Mathematics in proof I have acheived an A grade in all modules across all my subjects
In my spare time I practise kickboxing and have competed in various local competitions As a volunteer I am involved in a year seven Maths mentoring scheme and help at a homeless shelter I enjoy travelling and will be going to Nicaragua for a month after my A levels to help in a small village explore the local jungles and volcanoes and practise my Spanish I lived in France from the ages of 9 to 12 and learnt to adapt to a new language and culture
I very much look forward to exploring the new ideas of University level Mathematics and playing a full part in University life

Maths personal statement
Mathematics can at times be the single most frustrating subject I have ever studied yet I love it The euphoria of completing a particularly hard puzzle or the sudden realisation of a particular topic clicking into place makes the challenge and the hard work all the more worthwhile Studying both maths and further maths at 'A' level has been the most enjoyable and rewarding part of my academic career and the logic and reasoning required for the subject keeps me interested By studying mathematics to degree standard I hope to find and answer many new questions I might have In particular I am looking forward to exploring more in the field of pure maths My success and fascination in mathematics has given me a strong foundation to approach a degree with both the confidence and enthusiasm needed to succeed By entering myself for the mathematics AEA I hope to expand upon the mathematical knowledge I have already learnt by further developing the skills to apply them to demanding and complex questions Besides the possible reward of another qualification the prospect of gaining greater understanding alongside better techniques of application in maths will be a fantastic opportunity
To help support my studies I work as a customer assistant in a retail store Parts of my duties involve contact with members of the public and this has helped me enhance both my communication and problem solving skills By managing a busy schedule of studying work and a teenage social life I have acquired time management skills that will prove invaluable to me during my degreeSome of my most fulfilling and rewarding experiences in recent years include being a member of the cast in two drama productions at my secondary school Holding critical and demanding roles while under pressure to perform in front of an audience has helped me develop my confidence greatly and I look forward to continuing such activities at university Throughout my GCSE years I was a library assistant at school where my duties included the issuing and returning of books and working with the rest of the library staff to ensure the general daytoday running of the service The experience of working within the library structure along with other assistants helped me improve the way I work within a team and help shape me into a more mature individual More recently whilst studying for my Alevels I have chosen to spend a number of my free periods helping with some of the younger years' maths classes The communication and language skills developed from aiding students with a variety of abilities have helped augment my already keen social and communication skills whilst helping struggling students has taught me both patience and that positive results can be gained with enough perseverance
Although taking a break now due to a sporting injury I am also a keen martial artist I find that maintaining physical fitness helps general well being and concentration which has had a positive impact on my studies Having studied kickboxing for two and a half years to the standard of red belt whilst casually exploring the Korean martial art of TaeKwonDo I have realised a fascinating insight into the versatility and strengths of the human physique I hope to compete in the ring on a national level one day Martial arts are seen as a way of life they are certainly a big part of mine
It is because of my passion for the subject and the skills learnt from helping others that makes me believe I will make a successful mathematician Where knowledge and logic are necessary parts to being successful in maths it is my drive and passion that will help me to learn it alongside my communication and language skills that will help me use the knowledge in reallife situations

Actuarial Science personal statement
Catering for the future is one of the most beneficial practises of everyday life and without foreseeing what liabilities may lay ahead it is difficult to propose a plan of action in the event of such circumstances Therefore I find it intriguing that Mathematics can be put to practical use so that we can develop a logical consideration of financial prospects and aim to eliminate monetary risk by reducing unfavourable outcomes hence my desire to understand and acquire the skills of an actuary via a degree in actuarial science
My appreciation of Maths has slowly matured over the years and my A at IGCSE level gave me enough selfconfidence to take on the challenge of Alevel Mathematics In terms of my intended degree my most useful applied module is Statistics as I have seen its importance and regular usage in Actuarial Science and because I am fascinated at how convenient it can be to handle and process figures so that they may be manipulated to produce a feasible mathematic model
As Actuarial Science requires a sound combination of mathematics and a business background I decided to take AS level Economics to thus improve my analytical approach to business and familiarise myself with the techniques involved This process was aided by taking AS Critical Thinking which has not only developed my problem solving skills under extreme time limits but also my powers of interpretation when evaluating more extensive documents
I strongly believe that an actuary is a person of solid judgement and organisational skills and that it is important to be able to apply these techniques in all areas both academic and extracurricular to gain versatility
In view of that I have worked hard to obtain titles that convey authority and reliability such as House and School Prefect In the former I have the main duty to sort out teams for House competitions and in the latter it is essential that I communicate academic and social discipline with the younger students of the school and be of assistance to the teachers in any way possible as well as performing regular duties alongside fellow Prefects I have represented my House on numerous occasions over the last 7 years participating in sports such as cricket rugby volleyball swimming and athletics and I try to give my best and relish the competition involved
Inside my school I am also a member of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award scheme successfully achieving the bronze and silver awards I am currently pursuing the gold which I hope to finish before my time at St Andrews ends These awards are particularly helpful at constantly challenging my physical and mental dedication and I hope this practice can help me coordinate my commitment when it comes to times of perseverance as an actuary encouraging me to build up consistency in all my approaches so that I can have the courage of facing the real life consequences of my actions
Outside of school I have spent many hours of my free time during the last year completing my community service I use some of my Sunday afternoons attending a local orphanage in which myself and a few friends help out in any way including entertaining the children by organising and playing football matches Other than being in the school volleyball team I also am a member of a private volleyball team that enters various competitions throughout the course of the year and this has improved my ability to act as a team player
I have chosen to study in UK for its teaching reputation and in the hope that it will build effectively on my Britishstyle education here in Malawi the contrast between an upbringing in the 3rd world and life as a student in the 1st will hopefully inspire me to make the very best of this opportunity I trust that in due time I will have developed the necessary skills and experience to have what it takes to tackle the course but as far as confidence goes I am passionate about my career choice

Mathematics and economy personal statement
In Mathematics there is no good no evil no tomorrow no yesterday no reality I have always been attracted to Mathematics by the unquestionable symmetry that surrounds us everything being based on means of geometry I am truly convinced that the solution of a difficult problem is as important as the knowledge and the strength we gain in finding it

Why MathematicsEconomics at university level abroad The top ranking of your university and the high level of the course can offer me the strong academic background I need the clearcut nature of the subjects and the environment in which precise propositions can lead to elegant arguments to farreaching consequences including surprising applications

I developed my strength in problem solving and I enlarged my comprehension in maths concepts by training my maths skills on the basis of a strict daily schedule by submitting solutions for maths reviews and by attending maths competitions Due to my constant work and dedication in 5 years I attended 28 math competitions I got 28 diplomas and I was awarded 26 prizes The
opportunity of working in the National Olympic selection lot was a great experience for me as I had the chance of working with the best Maths teachers in my country The MathematicsInformatics profile attended at my high school enables me to easily tackle mathematical challenges and cope with the high level academic curriculum offered by you

Mathematics surrounds us Being interested and totally fascinated about Mathematics I enlarged my background by reading books based on the role of maths in nature I have found out that numbers explain the mysteries of life including cosmology fractals and even the human evolution the Golden Number being present in elements objects events in connection with everything around

Mathematics may be defined as the economy of counting as Ernest Mach says Mathematical models do very well in economics I would like to follow Economics together with Mathematics for the practical use of it as I am convinced that financial crises effects could be diminished or even avoided if more competent specialists worked in this field

I am certain that maths constitutes an endless research field (You could not step twice into the same river for other waters are ever flowing on to youHeraclites) as there can always be found new innovative solutions for the existing problems I once received a special prize for the most ingenious solution at a regional contest being the only participant that proposed a different solution form the one proposed by the organizers

The voluntary work performed within the European Youth Parliament and the Model United Nations sessions attended enlarged my horizon As part of the committee in charge with Gender Equality my desire to affirm myself in Maths a field where men are considered better became even stronger The fouryear activity performed in my high school's drama club and the regular gymnastics classes taken help me develop my imagination my creativity potential and strengthen my selfcontrol

The ambition I posses added to the international reputation for your excellence in Mathematics amplified by the highlevel mathematical skills acquired at your university and multiplied by the square root of my desire to follow Mathematics equals an outstanding visiting card for me in the future and my aim to succeed forward in Mathematics Quod erat demonstrandum

Mathematics Personal Statement
For mathematical proof is at the heart of mathematics itself and without it we would face wave after wave of contradiction facing an endless spiral of arguments as to the validity of each proposition Still it is the fact that proof provides a means to make new discoveries new developments or new connections such as the relationship forged between elliptic curves and number theory through Wile's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem (Taming the Infinite Ian Stewart 2008) which make it so important
To know that your contributions will be forever etched into the fabric of mathematics is something that cannot be understated Unlike a dispute or argument which seeks a means to an end mathematical proof seeks to move forward The proof also provides a rigorous axiomatic justification as to why results work the way they do
It's because of my need to understand why mathematics is the way it is that I attended the 'Making Maths at Manchester' Conference in July 2009 This gave me the opportunity to discover things such as Haga's Theorem through mathematical investigation I did this whilst working alongside fellow mathematicians from schools and colleges across the UK in a university environment This helped confirm my ambition to study mathematics at degree level
I have read a variety of mathematical books including the aforementioned 'Taming the Infinite' This also includes 'Letters to a Young Mathematician' '50 Mathematical Ideas You Really Need To Know' and 'Flatland A Romance of Many Dimensions' I have a strong preference for '50 Mathematical Ideas You Really Need To Know' because it really opened my eyes to what mathematics has to offer
At school I was involved in the running of the Shortigraph the school newspaper when I was in year 11 This involved many different skills during my time as Editor in Chief My leadership skills were significantly improved as I ensured everyone knew what they were doing Perseverance helped me secure the success of the newspaper Our ability to work as a team made sure Shortigraph activities were well coordinated
One of my current interests is the Liverpool School Parliament It is a large group of students who come together to discuss issues that affect young people This role requires me to manage my time effectively and communicate clearly in order to juggle my school work and represent the interests of young people I attend various Liverpool School Parliament events outside school hours as well as pursuing other interests such as reading gaming computing watching films making music videos and socialising One of the reasons why I wish to go to university is to expand these interests and gain a greater sense of independence in doing so
I feel university life will give me the opportunity to fully explore many of the ideas I have only touched the surface of Topics such as probability series calculus and complex numbers have been introduced to me through my Alevel studies and books that I have read Developing these areas combined with the challenging interesting and rewarding qualities that investigative mathematics possesses will make it an experience to look forward to
Thank you for considering my application

Mathematics Actuarial Science personal statement
Mathematics is not just a mere subject but a universal language Its plethora of Greek symbols interlaced with numbers makes it seem like a clandestine code which has to be deciphered This aside I believe the real magic of Mathematics lies not with its method of execution but its definite solutions founded on irrefutable proofs not ignoring the seemingly endless array of applications

Having studied Physics my awareness of these applications has increased substantially For instance the laws laid down by Newtonian Mechanics are seen to govern the everyday world and are difficult not to witness In Computing I have explored the logical arm of Mathematics put into practice Finite State machines Boolean equations and the programming languages themselves Even Chemistry like my other subjects echoes the hallmarks of Maths Through reading Du Sautoy’s Finding Moonshine I discovered that Chemistry the study of molecular interaction utilises Mathematics in the form of symmetry Overall it never ceases to amaze me how Mathematics seems to be everywhere at once even in places you expect not to find it
After participating in a stock exchange competition I was fascinated to learn mathematical models are used in forecasting something as volatile and stochastic as the stock market In fact to find out more I attended the PriceWaterhouseCooper Business Insight Day There I was informed about the consultancy role Actuaries play in corporate firms using their ability of Mathematics as a tool to assess financial risks and as a result I started to consider seriously a career as an Actuary The same employability skills that were constantly stressed by my school I saw firsthand at my work shadowing placement in a company managed by Viridian Group Plc where I observed the most important of these to be communication especially the ability of a professional such as an engineer to convey difficult technical knowledge to nonspecialist customers
Activities in school have helped me to work towards these professional skills and further enjoy Mathematics For example being the Financial Director of a Young Enterprise company gave me a valuable insight into running a business and made me more confident in expressing my ideas with clarity After being selected by interview I also had a large input as a team member in the Engineering Education Scheme where we were assigned a project in which we had to analyse and solve a reallife problem encountered by a firm Our agreed project involved the design of a SixWay Underground Distribution Board (UDB) lifting device and by carefully considering factors such as which handle length would give the required torque which structure provided the most equal distribution of forces we foresaw the eventual fabrication of a prototype This was followed by our delivery of one formal and many informal presentations which after each member received a Gold CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) Award Conveniently the scheme also tied in with my Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award which I am currently pursuing and hope to complete when I leave Methodist College The Award’s physical and mental hurdles have been demanding and require unyielding determination to strive for goals a practice which I still hope to employ as a future Actuary
Having been a rower for three years and now currently pursuing a martial art the importance of dedication is not a new concept for me Even though Maths can be extremely difficult and at times even impossible I wish to give it my utmost dedication it is an ever expanding subject in which my enjoyment will never cease to diminish

Maths and Computer Science Personal Statment
I believe that Mathematics is a key part of life Being ambitious and willing to face challenges asking questions and exploring problems without quite knowing how the solution will emerge are the key to my interest in Mathematics My studies in Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level have strengthened my interest in this subject and have shown me a complete new world of Mathematics In particular I have enjoyed studying networks and calculus It was exciting to find that Mathematical techniques could be used to solve real life problems such as differential equations that can be solved to design astonishing buildings
In addition to retaining a strong interest in Mathematics my fascination for computers has also grown Creating a website as part of my ICT coursework allowed me to use programming language such as HTML’ to make an efficient website It was easy to use and quite interesting to find out that programming language is an algorithm designed for computers to carry tasks quickly My decision to apply for the joint course was confirmed after I attended two summer schools After attending a number of lectures I understood what computer science consists of and its importance in our fast developing world I found that there is a sea of knowledge to be discovered and by studying a joint honours at degree level in such closely related subjects as Mathematics and Computer Science will give me a broad range of skills and expertise which I could use to solve multifaceted problems in the future
As part of my community placement in year 12 I provided Mathematics support for students with language difficulties As I am trilingual it was easy for students to communicate with me and get the best support Similarly a work experience at a warehouse in year 11 gave me a great opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds Through these placements I have improved my communication skills confidence teamwork and independent working skills Recently I have become a prefect and have joined the Young Enterprise Group I am looking forward to taking on the responsibilities involved In addition I have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Silver’ awards which was very challenging I worked as part of a team which helped me to build up my interpersonal and time management skills I believe the skills I have gained will be extremely useful at university to help me succeed
Alongside my studies I believe physical fitness is important in life therefore in my leisure times I swim and run Additionally the opportunity to play in a volleyball team has enabled me to work as part of a group Being a member of a team has required regular commitment to training and a high level of self motivation and these skills are some of the skills that I can use at university to help me be on top of my work and to motivate friends and team members to do well
I am sure that having a Joint Honours Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science will give me transferable skills which I could use in a variety of careers I am currently investigating a number of areas that appeal to me including software engineering and further postgraduate studies I am proud of my achievements and am open minded I intend to approach the future positively and have many aspirations as to what I am going to do at university I know that I will encounter new opportunities make new friends and rise to the exciting challenge of university life

Mathematics Personal Statement
The challenge of problem solving has always been key to my passion for mathematics For me the satisfaction gained from systematically working through a complex problem to an often unobvious solution is unmatched by other areas of study It is a continually intriguing and limitless academic discipline due to the fresh challenges that it provides However as my studies have developed I have realised that it is much deeper than just solving problems Having read Mathematics The New Golden Age by Keith Devlin I have enjoyed learning about fractals such as the remarkable Mandelbrot Set I have investigated number theory and have attempted some primality tests myself I have also studied NonEuclidean geometry topology and various other topics outside the Alevel specification They have all intrigued me and have given me a glimpse into the diversity of mathematics Studying maths has also enabled me to develop both a new level of comprehension and a more rational way of thinking It is therefore without a doubt my chosen path for further study at university
I have thoroughly enjoyed the variety of modules included in my studies with a particular interest in the pure modules I have always liked working with algebra and rearranging a jumbled set of coefficients into a wonderfully simple form such as in summations using standard results and in proof by induction Calculus is another favourite of mine and I have often relished using it in diverse contexts such as calculating rates of change using it on graphs and interchanging between a pdf and CDF in statistics The mechanics module perfectly coincided with my physics course By taking physics I have had the opportunity to apply my mathematical skills to a variety of situations and have developed my practical skills through a wide range of experiments By assisting others in their physics and mathematical studies I have also further developed my communication skills and my own understanding of these subjects
I take my role within the school community seriously As a prefect I have the responsibility of taking part in open evenings school events and acting as a role model for younger students Furthermore I mentor a year 8 class and have undertaken child protection training to assist them more effectively I have received various merits and awards from the school as well as certificates in the UK Maths Challenges
This summer I secured a week of work experience at an accountancy firm to gain an insight into a potential mathsrelated career Whilst I found the placement enjoyable it reaffirmed my passions towards the pure and applied mathematics I have studied
Like many mathematicians I also have a real fascination for music The link between the two subjects intrigues me because the way musical melodies and harmonies are meticulously ordered and pieced together is reminiscent of the process of solving a complex maths problem I find that music allows me to stretch my creative wings and I am fond of performing with my classmates and friends I am currently working towards grade 5 piano and have played piano and sung in many charity concerts both in and out of school Despite having not studied the GCSE course I successfully taught myself the required theory for my music ASlevel By learning to compose and appreciate various styles of music in the course I was inspired to start writing recording and editing an album which I intend to put on iTunes upon completion I am also a keen admirer of technology keeping up to date with the latest technology news specifically relating to the games industry I also enjoy playing Sudoku in my spare time
My choices of university reflect my ambitions and I look forward to meeting the challenge of university life headon I keenly await the transition to university and I am excited about studying mathematics at a higher level
