Most people feel lonely sometimes but it usually lasts only between a few minutes and a few hours This kind of loneliness is not serious In fact it is quite normal For some people though loneliness can last for years Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness
The first kind of loneliness is temporary This is the most common type It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention The second kind situational loneliness is a natural result of a particular situation-for example the death of a loved one or moving to a new place Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems such as headaches and sleeplessness it usually does not last for more than a year
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe Unlike the second type chronic(长期) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause People who experience habitual loneliness have problem socializing and becoming close to others unfortunately many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition
Many researchers agree that the loneliest people are between the ages 18 and 25 so a group of psychologists decided to study a group of college students They found that more than 50 of the students were situationally lonely at the beginning of the term as a result of their new circumstances but had adjusted after a few months 13 were still lonely after seven months due to shyness and fear They felt very uncomfortable meeting strangers even though they understood that their fear was not reasonable The situationally lonely students overcame their loneliness by making new friends but the chronically lonely remained unhappy because they were afraid to do so
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal healthy part of life chronic loneliness can be a very sad and sometimes dangerous condition
(1)How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage
ATalk to friends
BGo to see a doctor
CJust ignore it
DAsk your teacher for guidance
(2)In the last sentence of the second paragraph it refers to _______
Atemporary loneliness
Bsleeplessness
Ca new place
Dsituational loneliness

Btemporary loneliness does not need special attention
Cchronic loneliness can cause problems in socializing

The common cold is the world's most widespread illness which is probably why there are more myths(神话) about it than any of the other illnesses
The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold They are not They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person You catch a cold by coming into contact directly or indirectly with someone who already has one If cold causes colds it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever But they do not And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected(感染) people from the outside world by way of packages and mails dropped from airplanes
At the Common Cold Research Unit in England volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time After taking hot baths they put on bathing suits allowed themselves to be doused(浸入) with cold water and then stood about dripping(滴干)wet in drafty(通风) rooms Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose
If cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds why are they more frequent in the winter In spite of the most painstaking research no one has yet found the answer One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on
No one has yet found a cure for the cold There are drugs and pain suppressors such as aspirin but all they do is to relieve the symptoms
(1)The fact that the Eskimos don't suffer colds shows that
Acolds are really full of myths
Bviruses are the factors causing colds
Ccolds are more severe than other illnesses
Dthe idea that cold leads to colds doesn't stand up
(2)The experiments mentioned in Paragraph 3 made it clear that
Abeing doused with cold water did harm to one's body
Btaking hot baths made the volunteers easy to be tired
Cit was viruses not wet and cold that made people have colds
Dpeople who would like to exercise in the rain got colds more easily
(3)According to the passage colds are commonly seen in winter because
Athere is great difference between indoor and outdoor temperature
Bviruses can go into people's warm bodies more easily in winter
Cstaying together indoors makes it easier for viruses to pass on
Dpeople are usually weak because of the extreme cold in winter

Although onions taste delicious watering eyes come with the process when you cut them up Thankfully Good Housekeeping has suggested some tips to prevent yourself from crying while you are trying to cut up an onion
According to the findings from the Institute putting onions in a fridge 30 minutes before cutting can prevent the annoying hurt as the cold stops tearjerking (催泪) gas from being produced
Another way to reduce the gas released by the onion is to put it in water for a while Good Housekeeping recommends Cut the end off the onion and then put it straight into a bowl of water The water will draw out the acid making your tears fewer when you cut it
When an onion grows it mixes with sulfur (硫) in the soil to create a special mineral acid When the onion is cut into pieces it reacts and creates a gas As it reaches your face this annoying gas causes the eyes to produce tears
The root is where the gases are most concentrated so it is recommended that this part of the onion be left on as you cut it to avoid uncomfortable eyes Do this by cutting the vegetable in half down the middle then cut off part of one side to create a flat surface Then place the onion with its flat surface down and cut it towards the root
Also to reduce the gas's effect on your eyes cut it next to a window or near a fan so the gas is blown away from your face And take care to use a sharp knife this will make it easier to move through the vegetable causing fewer cells to be broken and less gas to be released as a result
(1)Refrigerating the onion before cutting can
Achange its taste
Bmake it easier to be cut up
Cavoid generation of the gas
Dhelp the gases mix more quickly
(2)From the fourth paragraph what happens when the onion is cut up
ASome acid mineral is lost
BThe tear mixture is created
CThe sulfur inside it pours out
DA chemical reaction produces a gas
(3)What does the underlined word this in Paragraph 5 refer to
AProducing more tears
BLeaving the root uncut first
CPromoting concentration
DMaking the onion more tasty
(4)The main purpose of the text is to
Aadvise and explain
Bexamine and analyze
Cargue and discuss
Dpresent and compare

Maybe tenyearold Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father But Dad you can't be healthy if you're dead
Dad in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75 of US population make every day The big question is why
There have been many myths about safety belt ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago The following are three of the most common
Myth the Number One It's best to be thrown clear of a serious accident
Truth Sorry but any accident serious enough to throw you clear is able going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing And chances are you'll have traveled through a windshield (挡风玻璃) or door to do it Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twentyfive times in cases where people are thrown clear
Myth Number Two Safetybets trap people in cars that are burning or sinking in water
Truth Sorry again but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation not to be trapped in them
Myth Number Three Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph)
Truth When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 metres

BHe was running across the street

(4)Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe

Cthey will be caught when help comes
Dcars catch fire easily

The African elephant the largest land animal remaining on earth is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统) Unlike other animals the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment As a big planteater it largely shapes the forestandsavanna (草原) surroundings in which it lives therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息)
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day it kills small trees and underbushes and pulls branches off big trees This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other planteaters
Take the rain forests for example In their natural state the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor By pulling down trees and eating plants elephants make open spaces allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor In such situations the forests become suitable for large hoofed planteaters to move around and for small planteaters to get their food as well
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species If the elephant disappears scientists say many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem
(1)What is the passage mainly about
ADisappearance of African elephants
BForests and savannas as habitats for African elephants
CThe effect of African elephants' search for food
DThe eating habit of African elephants
(2)What does the underlined phrase setting the terms most probably mean
AFixing the time
BWorsening the state
CImproving the quality
DDeciding the conditions
(3)What do we know about the open spaces in the passage
AThey result from the destruction of rain forests
BThey provide food mainly for African elephants
CThey are home to many endangered animals
DThey are attractive to planteating animals of different kinds
(4)The passage is developed mainly by
Ashowing the effect and then explaining the causes
Bpointing out similarities and differences
Cdescribing the changes in space order
Dgiving examples
