earthquakes are very strong When they happen in cities they can
be very serious Many people will be hurt or die in the
earthquakes Knowing some ways to protect yourself will help to
keep you safe in the earthquake
If you are indoors when the earthquake happens the safest
place is under a strong table or desk Sitting on the floor in a
doorway or close to a wall is safer than standing in the middle of
a room Remember to protect your head and neck with your arms
Stay away from windows tall furniture and pictures or anything
that may fall on you Do not try to run out of the building

Today the largest remaining area of hutongs in Beijing is
on the north of the Forbidden Cityin the area around the Drum
Tower the Bell Tower and Hou Hai There is a place where many
Chinese and foreign tourists come for a hutong tour We asked
several of these tourists to tell us about their impressions
Vicky Wang Hong Kong
It’s really strange—we’re in the middle of one of the
biggest cities in the world but in these hutongs it feels as if we’re
in a village in the countryside There are lots of trees everywhere
and all the buildings are only one or two storeys high Also there
aren’t many cars in the hutongs so they are quite quiet—very
different from the streets in the centre of Hong Kong It’s nice to
stroll around here and stop for a drink in one of the little cafes or
bars by the lakes
Yu Lou Shanghai
I don’t see what’s so interesting about these hutongs The
streets are too narrow—I couldn’t drive my Mercedes down
them And most of the houses are old and dirty China should
have a modern capital city that we can all be proud of Let’s get
