Whenever Jane Lockshin went out to lunch with her elderly aunt Sylvia she would offer to pay the bill After all Sylvia Bloom was a modest secretary who lost her beloved husband more than a decade ago She lived alone in a onebedroom Brooklyn apartment and took the subway everywhere including to her job at a Manhattan law firm She worked there—fulltime—until she was 96 Simply put Lockshin didn’t want Aunt Sylvia to blow her budget on lunch
So when Bloom died in 2016 at 97 it was something of a shock to discover that she’d left behind a multimilliondollar estate Almost as shocking She had chosen to give 82 million to charity Six million dollars went to educational programs at the Henry Street Settlement a social services organization in New York City An additional 2 million went to scholarship funds including at Bloom’s alma mater Hunter College She had millions says Lockshin and no one suspected it
Bloom’s bequest to the Settlement the largest in its 126year history will help fund a program for disadvantaged students The gift has been transformative not just because of the good we’ll be able to do with it says David Garza the agency’s executive director but because of the selflessness and the humility behind it
Sylvia Bloom’s story is indeed extraordinary but it’s not as uncommon as you might think Workingclass benefactors—secretaries teachers janitors and more—make headlines with aweinspiring regularity
21Why did Jane offer to pay the bill according to paragraph 1
ABecause her aunt lost her husband
BBecause her aunt refused to pay it herself
CBecause her aunt lived alone and was a secretary
DBecause she thought her aunt didn’t have much money
22What does David Garza’s words mean
APoor students will be funded by the money
BThe gift is important because of nothing but the good can be done with it
CIt is the devotion and modesty behind it that makes the gift extraordinary
DJane Lockshin’s donation is thought highly of
23What might the following paragraph talk about
AThe way the money was spent
BThe way Sylvia saved so much money
CThe inspiration Jane got from the story
DThe story of other donors like Sylvia

There are plenty of common fears that even if we don’t have them ourselves we totally understand spiders heights creepy clowns And then there’s fear of the number 13 It’s a number just like any other and yet there are horror movies about it some buildings intentionally have no 13th floor and plenty of couples avoid getting married on the 13th of the month
What makes this number so scary Well there’s no single reason behind the widespread fear Historians have pinpointed a few potential reasons for 13’s prevalence as an unlucky number
The most popular theory about the origin of fear of the number 13 is connected with the Bible there were 13 diners at the Last Supper The 13th to arrive was Judas who betrayed Jesus In Norse mythology(神话) too a table of 13 proved unlucky According to one of the myths the primary 12 gods were dining together peacefully until the god of evil Loki showed up As soon as this 13th guest arrived chaos and carnage followed The superstition(迷信) that a table of 13 diners spells bad news even made its way into Harry Potter
On its own there are no problems with the number itself It’s 13’s proximity to the number 12 that makes it look bad according to scientists and mathematicians In many ancient cultures 12 was considered to be a perfect number Civilizations as far back as ancient Sumer based their systems of telling time around the number 12 There are 12 hours on a clock and 12 months in a year As the number immediately following this perfect one 13 seemed flawed inspiring unease throughout the ancient world
24The first paragraph is intended to _______
Aattract readers’ attention on fear
Boffer background information
Cintroduce the topic of the passage
Dput forward an opinion
25The underlined word carnage in paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______
Achallenge
Bconfusion
Camazement
Dviolence
26According to the passage which of the following is true
AJudas betrayed Juses at the Last Supper
BLoki’s arrival brought about chaos during the meal
CIn many modern cultures 12 was regarded as a perfect number
DScientists proved that the number 13 was flawed

Earlier this year six Amazon delivery robots were introduced in a trial program in Snohomish County Washington The boxy machines which resemble sixwheeled coolers carry meals groceries and packages to homes and offices
As a growing number of citizens expect immediate or scheduled delivery for just about everything such services are fast developing which is regarded as an effective approach to solve the last mile delivery problem By shifting the delivery vehicles from roads to the sidewalk cities could greatly reduce traffic jams But companies like Amazon are not developing this delivery technology simply to clear up urban traffic Selfdriving vehicles and sidewalk robots could reduce lastmile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent according to a 2018 report
To gain public trust these machines must demonstrate they can safely and quietly share pedestrian spaces It’s actually really hard to move on crowded sidewalks and not bump into people says Renia Ehrenfeucht chair of the Community and Regional Planning Department at The University of New Mexico
Sidewalk robots may also face disruptions to their own routines including curious bystanders blocking their paths and thieves looking to grab a package on route I do think the largest problem is going to be malevolent(恶意) behavior toward these things says Mary Cummings director of the Humans and Autonomy Lab at Duke University Additional challenges include perfecting the software that helps delivery robots avoid both still and moving objects as well as dealing with city officials who want to protect public spaces For example San Francisco home to delivery startups such as DoorDash and Postmates put a ban in 2017 on autonomous deliveries by sidewalk robots and has only slowly opened the door for companies seeking permits Other
US communities have regulated where such robots can go and how they must behave
Given these obstacles sidewalk delivery robots are not necessarily destined to win the future A 2016 McKinsey report pointed out oldfashioned bicycles remain the most costcompetitive choice for many lastmile deliveries   (342 words)
27 Which of the following is not a reason for companies to invest in delivery robots
ATo ease the traffic pressure
BTo reduce the lastmile delivery costs
CTo gain public trust
DTo offer citizens immediate delivery
28 Why do city officials oppose the use of delivery robots
AThey worry that goods on delivery robots will be grabbed
BThey worry that the rights of pedestrians will be violated
CThey worry that curious onlookers will block the way
DThey think the software for delivery robots is inadequate
29 What is the author’s attitude towards the future of delivery robots
Ahopeful
Bpessimistic
Cdoubtful
Dindifferent
30 What is the best title for the text
ADelivery robots—A revolutionary step
BDelivery robots—An effective approach to traffic jams
CDelivery robots—A sidewalkblocking nightmare
DDelivery robots—Rise of new technology and the challenges

Sleep is vital to your physical and mental health On average adults should optimally receive between seven and nine hours of sleep each night   31   For example some people feel best with eight continuous hours of sleep while others do well with six to seven hours at night and daytime napping
While you might not be able to control some factors that interfere with your sleepyou can adopt habits that encourage better sleep Start with these simple tips
  32
Set aside no more than eight hours for sleep The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours Most people don't need more than eight hours in bed to achieve this goal Go to bed and get up at the same time every day Try to limit the difference in your sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends to no more than one hour   33
Pay attention to what you eat and drink
Don't go to bed hungry or stuffed   34   Your discomfort might keep you up Nicotine caffeine and alcohol deserve caution too The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take hours to wear off and can wreak havoc on quality sleep And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy it can disrupt sleep later in the night
Manage worries
Try to resolve your worries or concerns before bedtime Note down what's on your mind and then set it aside for tomorrow Stress management might help   35   Meditation can also ease anxiety In fact nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night—but if you often have trouble sleeping contact your doctor Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve
AStick to a sleep schedule
BBut those needs vary individually
CInclude physical activity in your daily routine
DBeing consistent reinforces your body's sleepwake cycle
EStart with the basics such as getting organized setting priorities and delegating asks
FIt can be hard to measure your sleep patterns against those of the people around you
GIn particular avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products within the next year according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health Electronic cigarettes or ecigarettes deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce a spray that the user takes in
As part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles the study compared the start of tobacco use among 222 students who had used ecigarettes but not any other tobacco products and 2308 who had neither used ecigarettes or any other tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade The 2530 students who initially reported never using tobacco underwent followup assessments after six and 12 months Students were asked about lifetime and past sixmonth use of ecigarettes or any other forms of tobacco products
During the first six months after being surveyed 307 percent of those who had used ecigarettes started using tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars compared to only 81 percent of those who had never used ecigarettes Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade 252 percent of ecigarette users had used tobacco products compared to just 93 percent of nonusers
While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns said NIDA Director Nora D Volkow MD Parents and teens should recognize that although ecigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes they do carry a risk of addiction
Recreational ecigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco said Adam M Leventhal PhD the first author on the study While we cannot conclude that ecigarette use directly leads to smoking this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth ecigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smokingrelated illness

When Universal Orlando's newest Wizarding World of Harry Potter ride Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure opens June 12 it will be a theme park game changer Case in point Universal planted 1200 live trees to recreate the dark woods outside Hogwart's where the giant gamekeeper Hagrid lives From there expect a forest's worth of incredible twists and turns

A study found that adolescents with early parent-set bedtimes were significantly less likely to suffer from depression suggesting that early bedtimes could have a protective effect by lengthening sleep
Results show that adolescents with parent-set bedtimes of midnight or later were 24 more likely to suffer from depression than adolescents with parent-set bedtimes of 10 pm or earlier Adolescents who reported that they usually sleep for five or fewer hours per night were more likely to suffer from acute muscle pains dizziness nausea and headaches than those who reported getting eight hours of nightly sleep Participants__who__reported__that__they__usually__get__enough__sleep__were__less__irritable__than__those__who__didn't①
James E Gangwisch assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center said that the results strengthen the argument that short sleep duration could play a role in the study of depression causes Our results are consistent with the theory that inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression working with other risk and protective factors through multiple possible causal pathways to the development of this mood disorder said Gangwisch Adequate__quality__sleep__could__therefore__be__a__preventative__measure__against__depression②
From__the__data__collected__it__was__found__that__some__participants__suffered__from__memory__loss__and__hallucinations③ These were associated with later parent-set bedtime shorter sleep duration and self-perception of not getting enough sleep
The__average__adolescent-reported__sleep__duration__was__7__hours__53__minutes__which__contrasted__with__the__9__or__more__hours__of__nightly__sleep__recommended__for__them④ Participants with a parent-set bedtime of 10 pm or earlier reported that they usually slept for an average of 8 hours 10 minutes which was 33 minutes more than adolescents with a bedtime of 11 pm and 40 minutes more than those with a bedtime of midnight or later With the exception of sleep durations of 10 hours or more per night higher average sleep durations were associated with progressively earlier average bedtimes
The authors of the study reported that there are a number of potential methods by which constant partial sleep deprivation could contribute to depression Lack of sleep may produce moodiness that hinders the ability to cope with daily stresses damage relationships with peers and adults and affect judgment concentration and impulse control They also suggested that behavioral interventions that involve educating adolescents and their parents about healthier sleep practices and helping them modify sleep habits could serve as the main preventative measures against depression
( )58 According to the passage which of the following statements is TRUE
A Not long enough sleep duration is a risk factor for depression
B Sleep deprivation is a direct cause of depression
C Adolescents are advised to get eight hours of nightly sleep per day
D Educating parents alone can be a precautionary measure against depression
( )59 In the passage which underlined statement is an OPINION
A ①  B ②  C ③  D ④
( )60 Based on the passage lack of sleep can lead to the following EXCEPT ________.
A strong attachment to friends
B being distracted easily in class time
C reacting slowly to the change of traffic lights
D poor performance in memorizing English vocabulary
C
It was like a bad sitcom Everything Leo said his wife Francie said the opposite He went to the gym he told me not since Bush was President she countered They'd been going on like this since they entered the exam room Today was my first time seeing them—and one of my first times seeing two patients at once
As I was wrapping up Francie stopped me Can we talk about his vision? His eyesight was getting worseshe told meparticularly at night True to form Leo denied it—but when I probed further he admitted that his vision wasn't what it used to be Several times Francie addedhe'd also been in near-accidents while driving at night
The three of us worked out a driving plan where Leo could drive during the day for short distances and Francie would drive him at night While Leo had some objections to the agreement Francie promised that he would follow it
When both of them left that dayI couldn't help thinking that Francie may have saved her husband's life
The American Academy of Family Physicians estimates that around 10 percent of family physicians now give patients the option to share their appointments with people who have similar health issues For doctors the benefits are obvious Shared appointments are efficient allowing us to see more of our patients in a day But shared appointments can be beneficial for patients too helping them to adopt healthy behaviors in a way that one-on-one visits don't
A person's smoking diet and exercise habits can depend in large part on the habits of his friends family or coworkers In a landmark study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2008 the Yale sociologist Nicholas Christakis found that when a spouse friend or sibling quit smoking it decreased a person's chances of smoking by 67 percent 36 percent and 25 percent respectively Other research has found similar positive social-network effects for things like medication adherence
Much of health in other words is a shared experience There are some conditions like a cold or a sprained ankle where doctors' recommendations are simple and social support won't make much of a difference But as a primary-care doctor I also treat chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure The knowledge required to manage these lifelong conditions can be overwhelming for some and stress makes patients less likely to carry out the instructions that doctors give Being around other people may help In patients with heart failure and diabetes for example group visits may improve retention(记忆) of medical information by 10 to 30 percent A study presented at the 2014 American College of Cardiology annual meeting meanwhile found that being married dramatically lowered one's chance of heart diseasepossibly because spouses helped reinforce medication adherence and exercise habits
Despite these outcomes it is easy to see why shared medical appointments aren't more popular They go against two principles that have defined medicine the patient-doctor relationship and confidentiality
One of my patients has been seeing me for months trying to quit smoking Her previous primary-care doctor had prescribed everything from nicotine patches to gum to pills Nothing worked The reason Her brother had moved in recently and smoking together was the one thing they did together Unless she could get her brother to stop smoking she told me it would be impossible for her to quit I told her to bring her brother to her next appointment—and hopefully I can convince them to find a new shared activity As Leo and Francie have taught me having someone else in the room could make all the difference
( )61 Which of the following statements about Leo and Francie is TRUE
A They went to the doctor together because they shared similar mental issues
B They went to see the doctor because Leo was hurt in an accident
C Leo wasn't allowed to drive after the doctor's appointment
D Leo noticed his vision problem before the doctor examined it
( )62 Shared appointments with the doctor may be of help for ________.
① high blood pressure ② sprained ankle ③ cold ④ heart failure ⑤ diabetes
A.①②③  B ①④⑤  C ②④⑤  D ①③⑤
( )63 Which could be the title for the passage
A Shared activity is good for health
B Two's company at the doctor's office
C Being around others may help patients
D What Leo and Francie have taught me
( )64 What is the writing purpose of the passage
A To show how family members help each other to improve health
B To persuade people to have more shared activities with partners
C To introduce the new practice of group doctor visits
D To describe the great influence of having someone in the room
D
Today the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded journalist Svetlana Alexievich approximately 970000 in recognition of a lifetime of excellence The 67-year-old author of Voices From Chernobyl and War's Unwomanly Face was praised by the Swedish Academy for her polyphonic(复调式) writings a monument to suffering and courage in our time
Prizes like the Nobel inspire much expectations before the announcement People give their best guesses as to who will winlook back on past winners and even place bets as if spectators at a Derby(赛马会).
Literary prizes reward artistic brilliance They help writers earn a decent living But is the public's fascination with prize-winning authors healthy Our impulse seems to increasingly contribute to a culture of turning authors into celebrities where readers follow the author instead of the book
A story should stand on its own as a considered complete book without biographical information from author It's an idea perhaps best conveyed in Roland Barthes's 1968 essay The Death of the Author The image of literature to be found in contemporary culture is arbitrarily centered on the authorhis person his history his tastes his passions
Nearly 50 years later a few still agree I believe that booksonce they are written have no need of their authors New York Times bestselling author Elena Ferrante once wrote If books have something to say they will sooner or later find readers if not they won'tshe continued True miracles are the ones whose makers will never be known
__①__ But the rules for submission for the Man Booker International Prizefor example strongly encourage authors to make themselves available for publicity And the foundation behind the National Book Award requires finalists to participate in their website-related publicity.
__②__ In 2007a reporter who showed up uninvited at Doris Lessing's house was the first to inform her that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature Today the Twitterati came knocking on Alexievich's digital door hour before the award was even official To be considered for a prize is to be a public figure
__③__ Harry Potter series author J K Rowlingwith over 56 million Twitter followers has actively addressed readers through public appearances and social media revealing much more than we could have imagined when we closed the final Harry Potter book We now know the house Harry's children will be sorted into that Dumbledore is gayVoldemort is actually pronounced with a silent t and a whole host of the other minor and major details about the backstory of the characters
The magical world Rowling created in her books—a relatively tight mystery with well-laid clues that led to a satisfying conclusionwhich had to prove their merits to the reader based on an internal logic—is being unraveled by her own hand
__④__  Of course public attention also has very important benefits for authors For three months after receiving the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in fiction Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad sold about triple its print sales from before the prize Publishers Weekly reports On Oct 52010 in the first FTOppenheimer Funds Emerging Voices Awards as Nigerian-born Chigozie Obioma accepted the prize for fiction with an easy smile his excitement was appreciable Given the cash prize of 40000 for each winner it's hard to downplay the importance of such an honor Such awards bring necessary visibility and funding to writers facing a literary landscape dominated by white men
But our culture of celebrity is often too wrapped up in the way we read How might the meaning of a work change if the author really didn't grow up in a poor neighborhood or if he or she was abused in childhood Readers studied the author's life as if it were the key to interpreting his or her novels
Behind our fascination is the question that drives all such questions What did the author intend By all means let us praise brilliant work and in doing so trust that the author has already told us enough and that the story he or she meant to tell ended with the final page
( )65 What can we learn from the passage
A People wait for the Nobel Prize announcement calmly and patiently
B Roland Barthes thinks it necessary to read literature centered on authors
C Elena Ferrante holds that books should be read independently of authors' life
D The Man Booker International Prize discourages authors from publicity
( )66 What does the underlined word unraveled in Paragraph 9 probably mean
A Underlined  B Unfolded  C Updated  D United
( )67 Which of the following is NOT the benefit of prize winning for authors
A It reveals more details about the characters in the book
B It dramatically increases the sales of the book
C It brings in necessary funding to authors
D It brings about changes in dominance in literary landscape
( )68 Where can the sentence Some authors satisfy even encourage their fans be best put in the passage
A ①  B ②  C ③  D ④
( )69 What is the author's attitude towards our fascination with prize-winning authors
A Approval  B Critical  C Indifferent  D Neutral
( )70 What is the main idea of the passage
A To be awarded a prize is to be a public figure
B Public fascination with authors brings benefits
C Turning authors into celebrities is a bad culture
D There are big challenges for prize-winning authors

On twitter a friend asked Twenty years from now how many Chinese words will be common parlance(常词) in English I replied that we've already had 35 years since Deng Xiaoping began opening China's economy resulting in its stratospheric rise—but almost no recent Chinese borrowings in English
Many experts are willing to explain China to curious (and anxious) westerners And yet I can't think of even one Chinese word or phrase that has become common parlance in English recently The only word that comes close might be guanxi the personal connections and relationships critical to getting things done in China Plenty of articles can be found discussing the importance of guanxi but the word isn't common in English by any stretch
Most Chinese words now part of English are known in their spelling and meaning to have been borrowed a long time ago from non-Mandarin Chinese varieties like Cantonese Kowtow gung ho and to shanghai are now impeccably(挑剔) English words we use with no reference to China itself Kungfu tai chi feng shui and the like are Chinese concepts and practices westerners are aware of And of course bok choychow mein and others are merely Chinese foods that westerners like I would say we borrowed the foods and their Chinese names merely hitched a ride into English
Given China's rocket-ride to prominence(突起) why so little borrowing We import words from other languages that are hard for English-speakers to pronounce We borrow from languages with other writing systems (Yiddish RussianArabic) We borrow from culturally distant places(India Japan) We borrow not only from friends but from rivals and enemies(German words in the Second World War Russian words during the Cold War and too many words to count from French during the long Anglo-French rivalry).
So perhaps China's rise is simply too new and we just need another 20 years or so We've seen a similar film before Japan's sudden opening to the world a world war and then forty years of an economic boom put quite a few Japanese words and concepts into the Anglophone mind kamikazefutonhaiku kabuki origamikaraoke tycoontsunami jiu-jitsuzen and honcho are all common English words that nowadays can be used without any reference to Japan Add to that the more specifically Japanese phenomena well known to the English-speaking world karate judosumo bonsai manga pachinko samurai shogunnoh and kimono Of course Japanese borrowed some of these words from Chinese like zen(modern Mandarin chán) and tofu(dòufu) But English borrowed them from Japanese not Chinese
It seems likely English will borrow from Chinese too as trade cultural and personal connections between China and the West grow China's development and how the West responds are two decisive factors when it comes to whether future Chinese borrowings will be new edibles cultural items or even philosophical terms

A survey carried out in Ningbo shows that content about Chinese culture in English textbooks is rare Students can not receive enough information about Chinese culture in English either from English textbooks or classroom teaching Such ignorance of the native culture in English teaching and learning is called cultural aphasia which is a major problem and is quite common
According to another survey conducted by researcher Zhou W.(2009) 74 of the subjects claim that they are more confident of and familiar with Chinese culture as they were born and live in China However 79 of them who have been learning English for at least 16 years are unable to describe Confucianism or Taoism in English The researchers recommend that educators should take measures to help students counter Chinese cultural aphasia

Text 10
Bananas which contain a lot of vitamins and minerals needed by the body represent one of nature's healthiest food choices In fact bananas have three times the amount of vitamins A and C found in apples The tasty fruit also contains five times more protein than apples These essential minerals and vitamins help control blood pressure and help muscle movement and digestion
Bananas provide not only physical benefits but also mental and emotional benefits Bananas contain something that helps lift our mood
The next time you want to polish your shoes reach for a banana skin Some people insist that the inside of a banana peel can produce a great shine for your shoes
Many people believe that bananas should never be placed in the refrigerator but it's just not true The banana industry has been working hard to correct this myth for years While banana skins will turn dark in the refrigerator the fruit will spoil less quickly in the refrigerator's cool environment
