I have never had a birthday party before so at this ripe old age I decided to throw one for myself Approximately 20 people confirmed that they were coming I splurged (挥霍) in the 1 store to buy decorations and plates I had a tiny budget in order to feed all of them
I sat there waiting and thinking Although all of my friends said they were coming no one showed up The celebration was supposed to start at 12 noon Here it was 400 pm and still no one was here The expensive cake was melting the food on the BBQ was burnt beyond recognition I cried and it was really hard not to cry
I decided to sit back and relax reflecting on the wonderful things that I did have and read Chicken Soup All of a sudden I heard a screech and a roar of an engine just outside my front door Mr Kenny apparently did everything he could to show up I cried and wept in his arms I'm not worth anything He brushed my tears held me tightly and said the magical words  I will ALWAYS be your friend We were bound to meet each other
He had so many challenges and difficulties in the past couple of weeks so did I However sitting outside under a blanket of clear blue skies laughing and talking I felt that I was truly blessed I thought that my father in the heaven sent him to me in my darkest hour when I wanted to give up this world
Yes life can be beautiful I don't know if Kenny realized that he saved my life last night Just a kind act taking time out of his very busy schedule making me smile and just warm huge hugs Sometimes that's all it takes

This morning my family and I went to a friend's home to help her get things back in order She was one of the unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by a tornado (龙卷风) One side of her home fell off and the roof was gone over a large part of the house Torrential rain fell the rest of the night and all of the next day following the tornado creating even more damage to her belongings The home is a total loss Still there is much that is valuable and our job today was to help her sort through the debris and find anything with actual value that she may want to take with her
My husband helped to move furniture and other things to the storeroom while our two younger children helped clean up the yard My oldest daughter and her boyfriend helped as well and my another daughter with me swept up all of the areas of debris sorting it for things that are important We worked systematically clearing the main living space first then moving on to the kitchen laundry area then the master bedroom
By the time we were done today though there was no denying the home had met with disaster we had gone far to restore order from the loss that had been there before
My thought in entering the day was that our friend who had been having trouble sleeping was being affected by that loss negatively I hoped that if we could restore order she would finally start to feel some sense of peace and her mind would quiet and allow her the muchneeded rest she so deserves

The point of an apology—to express regret and repair relationships—is lost because children may dislike the apologizer even more after the insincere apology than before
A new study looks at whether children can tell apart willingly given and forced expressions of regret—and they do The findings suggest that exploring ways to help your child learn to have empathy (情) for the victim(受害者) thus making sure of a sincere apology is more helpful than immediately forcing him to say I'm sorry
Smith and coworkers looked at how children aged 4—9 viewed three types of apologies among kids of the same age unprompted(发)apologies prompted but willingly given apologies and forced apologies They found that kids viewed willing apologies the same whether prompted or unprompted by adults But the forced apologies weren't seen as effective especially by the 7 to 9yearolds Smith says
All children thought the wrongdoers felt worse alter the apology than before but the 7 lo 9yearold children thought the forced apologizers' bad feelings were rooted in selfinterest (concern about punishment for example) rather than regret Children of all ages also thought the victims felt better after receiving a willing apology but they saw the receivers of the forced apology as feeling worse than the receivers of the willing apologies
How can parents help their young children respond with empathy after they've upset another person and deliver a willing apology When your child is calm help himher see how the other person is feeling and why Smith says An apology is one way to do it but there are lots of other ways Research shows that even preschoolers value it when a wrongdoer makes amends(补偿) with action Sometimes this is more powerful than words
1What is the study mainly about
AWhat kids usually do to show their regret BWhat is the best way for kids to apologize
CHow kids in different age groups apologize DWhat kids think of different types of apologies
2What do the children think of the forced apology
AIt makes both sides feel worse BIt calms down the victims quickly
CIt always brings punishment to wrongdoers DIt gets wrongdoers into the habit of telling lies
3What's the purpose of the last paragraph
ATo conclude the text BTo provide more details
CTo offer advice DTo give evidence
4What can be the best title for the text
AKids Are Too Shy to Apologize
BForcing Kids to Apologize Doesn't Benefit Anybody
CSincere Apologies Win Kids Good Relationships
DKids Need Help to Make a Sincere Apology
D
Can you imagine a world without music Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money Worse some schools have never had music classes to begin with But without them students' academic growth and emotional health could suffer In fact music classes are necessary for all students in schools
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and selfconfidence Teens today have too many learning tasks Besides they have family problems selfconfidence problems relationship troubles and other All of these can stop academic success but music education can help A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance
Music crosses language class cultural and political boundaries(界限) Music allows students from different countries to connect For example at a school talent show a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate Although they could not communicate verbally(口头) they were able to read the music in order to play the duet Two students from different cultures worked as a team with selfconfidence and common purpose through music
The gift of music is priceless We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students The world is losing its music and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back
1What can we learn about education with music classes
AIt allows schools to make more profits
BIt leads to a lot of emotional problems easily
CIt helps students to improve their schoolwork
DIt has a great influence on the culture of the country
2What do the two studies seem to show
ANot all students take part in music lessons
BStudents with great success like to attend music lessons
CMusic plays an important role in students' success
DStudents having music classes are better in all lessons
3The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that _______
Adifferent cultures have different styles of music
Bmusic makes crosscountry communication possible
CJapan has a good international relationship with America
DJapanese and American students are good at playing the piano
4What is the best title for the text
AHow to Get Music Back BMusic Education in Schools
CMusic—a Bridge to Understanding DThe Importance of Listening to Music

Holly was confused as she opened the birthday present from her best friend Susan—it was a twelvebyeightinch dark blue carpet Her thanks was hardly heard as Holly tried hard not to show her disappointment
The next morning I carried a kitchen rubbish bag outside only to find Susan's carpet lying there I immediately reached in and pulled it out of the rubbish can After giving it a brushing I brought it into the house and put it away
Before Holly's birthday Susan had been a regular visitor in our home But suddenly I realized that it had been nearly three weeks since I'd heard the mention of Susan's name I missed her warm smile very much
Susan invited us to go to her house after school tomorrow Holly said as soon as she arrived from school From her voice I sensed she was pleased with the invitation
We were traveling along the winding country road that led to her house the following day On the way Susan talked nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats they had taken in and cared for
When we came to a stop Susan's foster mom—who introduced herself as Glenda—gave us a warm welcome Susan guided us through the house She proudly showed us her room which was only decorated with some shabby used furniture
I followed Susan's foster mom Glenda into the kitchen After clearing a small area Glenda poured us each a cup of black coffee with her trembling hand Then she began to relax as we drank our coffee and chatted about her cats
Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl's past In an instant I came to respect this warmhearted woman who had opened her home to a younger girl and tried hard to make a difference in her life

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1
As daylight began to fade we offered our thanks for the visit and said goodbye Holly sat quietly in the car on the way home pressing her forehead against the window as if lost in thought All the way we didn't say even a single word No sooner had we come to a stop in the driveway than she threw open the back door and flew straight to the side gate of our house I followed her silently and my throat tightened as I observed my daughter standing by the rubbish can looking inside Soon she puffed paused for a second or two and walked inside seeming slightly anxious and irritated
Paragraph 2
Is this what you are looking for I asked her in a gentle voice as I drew out the carpet from the cupboard and placed it in front of her She gazed at me with absolute surprise which soon turned to wild joy Thanks Thank you Mom but She nearly screamed out when I threw open my arms and hugged her tightly just as she did with the carpet I could see tears shining in her crystal eyes a drop or two splashing onto the dark blue carpet Magically what she once didn't even want to refer to now turned out to be her precious birthday present
