Reading a book and watching a film are two very different experiencesbut expectations can be high when a film of a favourite book is madeThere are many times I have been disappointed by a film of a book I loveSo maybe highly regarded books do not always make good filmsIt is safe to say that great movies may be made from not particularly good books
The source material may be anything from classic novelsshort storiescomic books and stage playsas well as nonfiction such as biography and autobiographyeven those written by ghostwritersAll can work wellbut why do many adaptations and indeed remakes fail with both cinema audiences and critics
A key question is obviously how close to the original the film isSince a typical film is only around two hours longit becomes a question of what to leave outand how to script the dialogueSometimes there may be changes to the plotadditions and even different endings to please producersdirectors and test audiencesIlike many peoplehave often left the cinema feeling the film is not like the book
Another problem area is the castWhether suitable actors are found or not can mean the difference between success and failureReaders of the book use their imaginations to visualise characters and have very definite ideas about how characters look and soundThis is where I think many film adaptations fall down
Sometimes authors are very involved in the process and many may even be the screenwritersThis can actually be a bad thing because they may be too close to the material and find it difficult to adaptAt other times they are not the screenwritersand there are instances where writers have been very unhappy with the film versions of their workRoald Dahl and Stephen King are examples of thisEven more extreme was novelist JDSalinger who made sure no film versions of his popular novels could ever be madeIn this situationit is clear viewers will not be disappointed
1In what situation adaptations from books to films possibly satisfy the audiences
AAdaptations of lower expectation from audiences
BAdaptations of popular books
CAdaptations of good books
DAdaptations of books that audiences love
2Novelist JDSalinger is mentioned in the last paragraph in order to
Atell us how disappointed the audiences are
Bshow that many authors are involved in the process of making films
Cprove that authors may not necessarily be good screenwriters
Dshow some writers are against the idea of making books into films
3What is the purpose of the passage
ATo argue that good books should be adapted for films
BTo persuade the audiences to accept the adaptations from books to films
CTo explain the reasons why many adaptations from books to films failed
DTo inform that adaptations should be based on various kinds of books

Oncewhen I was a teenager my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circusFinally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter
This family made a big impression on meThere were eight childrenall probably under the age of twelveYou could tell they didn't have a lot of moneyTheir clothes were not expensivebut they were cleanthe children were wellbehavedall of them standing in linetwobytwo behind their parentsholding handsThey were excitedly talking about the clownselephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voiceOne could sense they had never been to the circus beforeIt promised to be a highlight of their young lives
The father and mother were at the head of the packstanding proud as they could beThe mother was holding her husband's handlooking up at him as if to sayYou are my knight in shining armor He was smiling and responding in pridelooking back at her as if to say You got that right. The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wantedHe proudly responded Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus
The ticket lady gave the priceThe man's wife let go of his handlowered her head and her lips began to shakeThe father leaned a little closer and askedHow much did you say? The ticket lady again told him the priceThe man obviously didn't have enough money
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any senseso I understand how the kids would feelI felt sorry for them
