Ludwick Marishane is the winner of lots of prizes People call him one of the brightest young men in the world He is very happy about his success DryBath is helping people stay healthy And DryBath also helps to save water That's important in many parts of the world where it's difficult to find clean water Now he wants to invent other things and he wants to help other young people to become inventors too

Nikola Tesla was a scientist whose work largely centered around electricity Samuel Langhorne Clemens whose pen name is Mark Twain in addition to being a writer was interested in technology and science Given not only the greatness of their minds but also the overlap (重叠) in their interests it seemed only a matter of time before they would meet each other
According to the science blog It's Okay To Be Smart Tesla had been very sick in the 1870s before he moved to the U S His doctors thought he might not survive Since there was relatively little else he could do during that period of time he read all the books he could at the local library Among those books were several of Mark Twain's earlier works which Tesla described as so interesting as to make me completely forget my hopeless state He went on to say that those books may have been the reason for his recovery (恢复)
The Irish Times reports that the writer and the inventor became friends in the 1890s Tesla was living in New York and even though Twain and his family lived in Europe at the time Twain was a frequent traveler to New York Twain became interested in Tesla and his work after hearing about an electric motor (发动机) the scientist had invented while working for Westinghouse
He recognized that Tesla's motor was better than a model his partner James Paige had come up with which Twain had been thinking about investing (投资) in Tesla advised against Paige's motor but Twain still put money in another of Paige's machines and suffered big losses
Twain was very interested in electricity and Tesla was looking for all kinds of new ways to use it so it's hardly surprising that Twain became a visitor at Tesla's lab
Although there're very few letters between the two great men it is known that Tesla was invited to Twain's daughter's wedding which is a sure sign of the real friendship that had been built between them and continued until Twain's death on April 21 1910
28 How did Mark Twain's books help Tesla
A They freed his mind from pain
B They guided him to the field of science
C They led him to create more inventions
D They encouraged him to come to the US
29 What attracted Twain to Tesla
A His survival story
B His interest in reading
C His decision to move to the US
D His achievement in Westinghouse
30 What happened between Twain and Paige
A Twain compared him with Tesla
B Twain placed all his hope on him
C Twain wrongly believed in his product
D Twain was friends with him through thick and thin
31 What is the best title for the text
A All roads lead to Rome
B Great minds think alike
C Rome was not built in one day
D Darkness and night are mothers of thought
D
According to the US economist Robert Gordon all the impressive stuff has been created we have run out of the big lifechanging ideas needed to encourage rapid economic growth and engineers are now only just making slight changes Inventions such as mobile phones Gordon says have had less impact than say the invention of indoor plumbing (路系统)
But this is a misunderstanding of how engineers work There is no Wow moment The development of new technology happens little by little You build upon the work of those before you thinking about what could be done better and what could be improved It's an unending task Michael Faraday invented the first electric motor But Faraday's breakthrough followed William Sturgeon's invention of the electromagnet (电磁铁) and Alessandro Volta's invention of the battery before that Faraday would have expected future engineers to pick up the baton (接力棒) later down the line
Reduced energy supplies increasing populations and mass urbanisation (城市化) keep clever young engineers awake at night Those for example who enter the yearly James Dyson Award invent things that solve these problems and more The 2012 winner Dan Watson designed a clever system of escape rings for fishing boat nets that deals with the issue of overfishing — not an exciting topic but his invention is brilliant nevertheless Human inventiveness remains undiminished (未减少) in the face of new global challenges
Our problem is patience We expect new technology at a rate like never before I can't tell you the world's next big invention Last week brought news that we've invented a new way to deal with antibioticresistant bacteria Next week may bring a major development in another field The biggest thing holding invention back is our impatience With enough time and support bright young engineers will develop exciting new technology to solve the world's trickiest problems Many have already begun
32 Why does the author mention what Robert Gordon says
A To bring up the topic
B To introduce a new invention
C To provide background information
D To express his opinion about the topic
33 What can we infer from Michael Faraday's example
A New technology has been developing step by step
B New inventions fail to deal with new global challenges
C Michael Faraday set a good model for William Sturgeon
D Technology helps future engineers achieve success smoothly
34 What makes Dan Watson's invention excellent
A His young age
B His patience with technology
C His effort to solve real world problems
D His wish to win the James Dyson Award
35 Which word best describes the author's attitude to technological development nowadays
A Doubtful           B Uncaring        C Objective    D Hopeful

Why is science education important in our schools Science is everywhere  36  As children grow up in an increasingly technologically and scientifically advanced world they need to be scientifically literate (文化) to succeed Ideally teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to think learn solve problems and make informed decisions  37
Governmental guidelines and tests often focus on middle and high school level STEM (science technology engineering and math) education  38  Not only does science education teach young learners problemsolving skills that will help them throughout their schooling it also engages them in science from the start
Kids usually form a basic opinion about the sciences shortly after beginning school If this is a negative opinion it can be hard to engage those students in science as they grow older  39  By doing so students will be encouraged to learn the sciences throughout school
40  It connects students' lives with important problemsolving and critical (批判性) thinking skills Teaching these skills through science education gives students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school and beyond
A Science education gives children more choices
B Engage young students with interesting materials
C The process of questioning is more direct in science
D Science education is one of the most important subjects in school
E We are surrounded by technology and the products of science every day
F But many educators believe science education should begin much earlier
G These skills are important to every aspect of a student's education and life
