An eightyearold child heard her parents talking about her little brother All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money left They were moving to a smaller house because they could not afford to stay in the present house after paying the doctor’s bills Only a very costly surgery could save him now and there was no one to loan money to them
When she heard her father say to her tearful mother in despair Only a miracle can save him now the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully
Holding the precious piggy bank tightly she came to the local drugstore She took a quarter from her bank and placed it on the glass counter
And what do you want asked the pharmacist(药剂师) It’s for my little brother the girl answered He’s really really sick and I want to buy a miracle
His name is Andrew and he has something bad inside his head My father says only a miracle can save him So how much does a miracle cost
We don’t sell it here child I’m sorry the pharmacist said smiling sadly at the little girl
Listen I have the money to pay for it If it isn’t enough I can try to get some more Just tell me how much it costs
In the drugstore a welldressed customer asked the little girlWhat kind of a miracle does your brother need That welldressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong a surgeon specialising in neurosurgery(神外科)
I don’t know she replied he’s really sick and my father can’t pay for an operation So I have brought my savings
How much do you have asked the man One dollar and eleven cents the girl answered bitterly
Well what a coincidence smiled the man A dollar and eleven cents—the exact price of a miracle for your little brother
Dr Armstrong took her money and then they headed for the girl’s home _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The operation was completed successfully without charge ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ⅠDear Peter
How is everything going on with you recently I’m more than glad to receive your letter asking me for help In fact it’s a great honour for me to introduce some classical Chinese poems to you The following are my arrangements for it
Firstly let’s fix a time when both of us are available What about this Saturday afternoon In addition there is no doubt that the People’s Park is an excellent place to learn classical Chinese poems which is not far away from my home and yours If it’s not convenient for you please tell me to make necessary adjustments
Looking forward to your instant reply
Yours

Ⅱ Dr Armstrong took her money and then they headed for the girl’s home After introducing himself to the little girl’s parents Dr Armstrong headed directly for Andrew’s room where a weak and pale little boy lay in the bed Smiling gently towards the boy Armstrong whisperedYour sister bought you a miracle which would soon chase away the monster in your brain Shooting a grateful look at his sister and Dr Armstrong Andrew smiled Two days later the boy was transferred to Dr Armstrong’s department where a 5hour operation was conducted
The operation was completed successfully without charge As their parents received the bill which read Zero Dollar for the operation they both shook their head in pleasant disbelief and thanked Dr Armstrong many times The girl also planted a sweet kiss on Armstrong’s cheek The grateful and joyous family finally understood that a miracle was not something that could be bought with money but occurred when kind and generous strangers listened with care and helped out without asking for anything in return
